Achieves
Gold Award in
APICS
Passport Program
|

|
Last year's
Board, with Virgil Charles as chapter president, achieved the
Gold Circle Award. This is a tremendous achievement and
the Board deserves a kudos for this prestigious achievement.
The Passport
Program provides a guideline of activities for chapters to follow
to help ensure strong chapter management. The program encourages
strong organizational management practices, including solid strategic
planning, continuity among leadership, recruiting and retaining
members and promotes action and innovation. There
are four award levels. The highest level is Platinum, which
is awarded to chapters that have achieved the Gold award for five
consecutive years. The Gold award is the second highest
achievement, followed by Silver and Bronze.
The Gold
Award recognizes organizations that have demonstrated exceptional
organizational management skills. These recipients have surpassed
minimum requirements in all areas of concentration, employed superior
teamwork techniques, and developed integrative and innovative
skills in problem solving. Chapters submit documentation
to a panel of veteran APICS volunteers and regional leadership.
The panel evaluates the programs and provides objective guidance
through instructional feedback.
In addition
to the panel evaluation and guidance, organizations also receive
continued Society support, recognition, and achievement awards
at the Volunteer Leadership Recognition Reception at the
annual APICS Conference.

Chapter President's Message ~
August
2005
Dear
Members and Friends,
Why
APICS?
After 24 years
in operations and industrial engineering, I have found one trait
common to all profitable companies; they execute and control their
businesses very well against customer needs. This requires leadership,
efficiency, agility and no-contingencies (LEAN).
The effective
execution and control of operations is the foundation for world-class
operations. If a businesses success or failure is determined by
its ability to execute well, then each individual within that
organization must contribute and help to achieve the level of
excellence required by that organization. As manufacturing professionals
our careers demand skills that are an integral part of the organizational
efforts to continually cut waste and transform capabilities to
add value. For more than 30 years, APICS educational programs
have helped individuals and organizations become more productive
and competitive by providing in-depth, specialized knowledge of
operations management.
Why APICS and why now?
We are at the
beginning of the next level of growth within the association,
both in real terms and in the services planned to meet the needs
of our members and businesses. APICS has changed dramatically
over the last three years and this change has been positive. The
educational material issues are being addressed, and the governance
and organizational make-up has changed to be more responsive to
chapters and members. Recently, a new certification track (Certified
Supply Chain Professional CSCP) was introduced to meet rapidly
changing educational needs in the field of supply chain management.
The CSCP program will be launched in conjunction with the 2005
APICS International Conference and Exposition, October 16-18,
in New Orleans, Louisiana. The CSCP learning system will consist
of a blended learning approach incorporating self-directed study
courses, Web-based learning, and classroom-based education offered
through colleges and universities, corporations, and the APICS
network of local chapters throughout North America.
Web based tools are being developed and utilized for the administration
and marketing of our organization, and the branding transformation
to the “Association for Operations Management” is complete.
Your local board
is working hard, and we know the quality and the level of participation
applied to the educational programs made available will determine
our success in the upcoming year.
Chapter boards are the backbone of APICS. They provide invaluable
experience to guide the business of the chapter. Being a contributing
member of a volunteer organization is not easy. Board members
put in many hours and give up precious time they could be spending
with their families. The chapter needs to recognize these individuals
for their continued contribution and hard work. This year we had
very few candidates come forward to join the board and we need
more board members. I invite any member to call up and volunteer,
and I hope to be here next year at this time detailing the successes
we realized towards the goals of the association and our members.
Do not hesitate to call me with any recommendations or if you
would like to volunteer.
I believe in
the APICS objective and in the association’s desire to provide
exceptional educational programs and resources for professional
growth to its members. Being part of this society has been rewarding
and invaluable for me personally. This upcoming year we will focus
our resources to provide a steady stream of educational offerings.
Over the summer break we set up our fall schedule. This September
we kick off our season with a ½ day seminar conducted by Dr. Alan
G. Robinson on “The Secrets of Truly Lean Production”. If your
organization is serious about Lean then I am sure you will attend.
We are also offering another round of open CPIM certification
review classes at DHS Systems in Orangeburg, NY starting with
the Basics of Supply Chain Management on September 20th. Our monthly
PDM schedule starts on September 13th with Don Frank presenting
“ The Idiots Guide to Six Sigma”. So we welcome you to participate
and hope to see you at our educational events. Get ready for an
exciting year with the Tappan Zee Chapter.
Sincerely,
Dave
Tooker, CFPIM, QI

APICS Introduces Supply Chain Professional
Certification
APICS announces the development of the Certified Supply Chain Professional
(CSCP) designation to specifically
address educational needs in supply chain management. The CSCP
designation is designed for professionals interested in increasing
their knowledge of supply chain management, those currently working
in the field of supply chain management, and those working with
enterprise resources planning (ERP) systems. The CSCP program
will be launched in conjunction with the 2005 APICS International
Conference and Exposition, October 16-18, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Tappan Zee Chapter
achieves "Silver" in the 2004 Passport Program
At the International Conference in San Diego, CA
October 10-13, 2004 the Tappan Zee Chapter was awarded Silver
in the Passport to Future Improvement Program.
The Passport Program is a standardized exercise that promotes
action and innovation. With the assistance of an instructional
template, individual organizations plan and execute a strategy
of progress within the field of production and inventory management.
Specifically, they identify an opportunity for innovation, prescribe
a program to address the opportunity, implement the program, measure
the results, and undertake further action to improve future outcomes.
It is a description of the organization's overall experience that
is submitted to a panel of veteran APICS volunteers and regional
leadership. The panel evaluates the programs and provides objective
guidance through instructional feedback.
The Passport Program encourages strong organizational management
practices, including solid strategic planning, continuity among
leadership, and recruiting and retaining members. Individual members
also benefit by learning management skills that translate to on-the-job
success. These skills involve stronger communication techniques,
enhanced writing abilities, expanded leadership acumen, and sound
financial practices.
Participating in Passport provides a roadmap to achieve quality,
promote customer service, help new and existing board members,
and becomes a historical record of the Chapters' accomplishments.
