2006-2007 Tappan Zee Chapter Board of Directors Elected
The slate of nominees was approved and the new Board of Directors was sworn in at our June 13, 2006 PDM. This list was emailed to all members in May but is also available here by clicking on the .pdf file.

Please note that positions are still available, as well as individual tasks or projects. Please consider volunteering some time to help make your chapter even better than it is. The more people who get involved the easier it is for everyone.

New APICS Testing Site Open - CompUSA in White Plains, NY

Promissor has announced that the White Plains site is now open and accepting registrations. The White Plains Center offers testing every Thursday from 9am to 4pm.

This great news for the Tappan Zee Chapter community as we have seen local testing sites close with only the NYC location remaining open.

TZ Chapter President's Message

August 2006

Dear Members and Friends,

Chapter impacts were solid this past year and our C-BAR (Chapter Bench Marking and Reporting) Program submission will hit the highest rating of gold. I would like to thank the Board of Directors and our membership for all their support last year. Looking forward to the upcoming year I have a good sense of excitement and confidence that APICS will continue to provide solid, value-added services for our business community. Due to the downward trend of interest in CPIM Certification, many new products have rolled off the APICS production line. The new CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional) Certification has taken the stage with a broad base of support from professionals in the supply chain market. The recent on-line certification review classes provide the busy working professional a flexible way to prepare for the CPIM exams with solid e-education solutions, and the Society’s branding initiative to the “Association of Operations Management” has been a success. Over the past two years APICS has listened to the customer and has delivered the value to its membership.

On June 28, 2006 the Tappan Zee Board held a joint meeting with regional ISM and CSCMP board members to establish the 2006-2007 joint programs’ objective. Combining our PDM initiatives will offer our members additional networking and progressive topics of interest.

The effective execution and control of operations is the foundation for world-class operations. If a businesses success or failure is determined by its ability to execute well, then each individual within that organization must contribute and help to achieve the level of excellence required by that organization. As manufacturing professionals our careers demand skills that are an integral part of the organizational efforts to continually cut waste and transform capabilities to add value. For more than 30 years, APICS educational programs have helped individuals and organizations become more productive and competitive by providing in-depth, specialized knowledge of operations management.

Educating Future Professionals

Education and training are extremely important for the Operations Management Professional. A system’s success depends on people and their understanding of key concepts, such as those found in the APICS body of knowledge. Serving as a volunteer leader with APICS for the last 15 years has been of tremendous value to me, both personally and at the professional level, and has truly changed my career from an Industrial Engineering slant to that of an operations management and business development professional. Educating the next generation of operations managers will always be something that we, as professionals, should continue to fully support. Through my instruction, volunteering and direct experience I have seen the tremendous challenges facing our profession. Providing value requires leadership. I first volunteered with APICS to teach certification classes because I had always wanted to do some teaching and I enjoyed it very much. If you have received value from your affiliation with APICS, you should return some time and effort to help your chapter or region. It is not always easy or convenient, but there is satisfaction knowing that you have made a difference.

I would like to welcome our new board members: Serge Migdal, Director of Company Coordinators. Paul Finelt, Director of Marketing and Holly Wiles, Director of Educational Development. Get ready for another exciting year.

Sincerely,

Dave Tooker, CFPIM, QI

Tappan Zee Chapter achieves "Silver" in the 2004 Passport Program

At the International Conference in San Diego, CA October 10-13, 2004 the Tappan Zee Chapter was awarded Silver in the Passport to Future Improvement Program.

The Passport Program is a standardized exercise that promotes action and innovation. With the assistance of an instructional template, individual organizations plan and execute a strategy of progress within the field of production and inventory management. Specifically, they identify an opportunity for innovation, prescribe a program to address the opportunity, implement the program, measure the results, and undertake further action to improve future outcomes. It is a description of the organization's overall experience that is submitted to a panel of veteran APICS volunteers and regional leadership. The panel evaluates the programs and provides objective guidance through instructional feedback.

The Passport Program encourages strong organizational management practices, including solid strategic planning, continuity among leadership, and recruiting and retaining members. Individual members also benefit by learning management skills that translate to on-the-job success. These skills involve stronger communication techniques, enhanced writing abilities, expanded leadership acumen, and sound financial practices.

Participating in Passport provides a roadmap to achieve quality, promote customer service, help new and existing board members, and becomes a historical record of the Chapters' accomplishments.
